Before P Diddy…There was Will Smith

In recent weeks, the entertainment industry has been rocked by allegations against two of our major mainstream black entertainers - Sean Combs, also known as Puff Daddy and the beloved actor Will Smith. These claims have ignited a firestorm of controversy and speculation, forcing audiences to reconsider their perceptions of these iconic celebrities.

Days before the allegations against Diddy surfaced, social media was abuzz with accusations made by Brother Bilaal, a former friend and personal assistant to Will Smith. Bilaal claimed that Smith threatened his life after he refused to sign a non-disclosure agreement. This document was allegedly related to an incident where Bilaal walked in on Smith and actor Duane Martin in an intimate act(12).

Adding fuel to the fire, Bilaal also alleged on the Tasha K show on YouTube that Smith caught his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, having intimate relations in the living room couch with singer Marc Anthony and reacted violently(3).

Despite what Bilaal describes as an acrimonious relationship with Jada, she was the one who reached out to him to mend fences between him and Smith(4). According to Bilaal, this renewed friendship was rooted in business - Smith was writing a book and wanted Bilaal's help in promoting it to around 200 celebrities5. However, Bilaal alleges that after his services were rendered, Jada told Smith not to pay him, leading to renewed tension(6).

This series of accusations paints a complex picture of a man admired by many young Black men, including myself. It is my hope that these allegations are untrue. Yet, they offer important lessons:

1. Avoid resorting to threats or violence in conflicts. If Bilaal's claims are true, Smith should have tried to resolve the situation peacefully instead of resorting to intimidation(7).

2. Value friendships over money. If a friend provides a service, they should be compensated. It's not worth losing a long-standing friendship over a few thousand dollars, especially considering Smith's estimated net worth of over 300 million dollars(8).

3. Be careful about who you let into your inner circle. The incident where Brother Bilaal allegedly found Will and Duane in a compromising situation serves as an example. If their friendship was genuine, perhaps the appropriate course of action would have been for Bilaal to sign the non-disclosure agreement. This could have provided Will with peace of mind, knowing that his private matters wouldn't be exposed. Will may have viewed Bilaal's refusal to sign the agreement as a betrayal, leading him to question Bilaal's trustworthiness.

As the story continues to unfold, the truth remains to be seen. But one thing is clear - these controversies serve as a stark reminder of the complex dynamics of celebrity culture.
